Student Organizations Host New Mexico State Auditor
In April, Anderson welcomed New Mexico State Auditor Joseph Maestas to speak with UNM students about the responsibilities of his office and internship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. The event, hosted by Beta Alpha Psi, the American Indian Business Association (AIBA), and Management Accounting, Fraud and Internal Audit (MAFIA), brought together students interested in careers in public service and accounting.
Maestas was joined by colleagues within the Office of the State Auditor (OSA), including Policy Director Dave Peña, HR Manager Zarah Rouse, and Graduate Intern Annette Gonzales.
Gonzales is currently an MBA student pursuing a degree in accounting online. Gonzales started at the OSA as an undergraduate intern and, after graduating with her BBA in finance, began working full time as a graduate intern.
Gonzales initially heard about the internship at the business and accounting career fair held on campus.
“I’ve done so many wonderful and exciting things [at the OSA]. I work with special investigations, I also work in conservatorship. But best of all, I get advice daily from some of the most influential people in our field. It is so exciting,” said Gonzales.
“My education here at Anderson played a huge role in opening those doors for me. I can honestly say that my job is extremely rewarding. Auditor Maestas is doing wonderful things for the state of New Mexico and I’m so proud to be a part of that.”
Gonzales hopes to continue working for the OSA after graduating.
“If there’s anything that you learn from my story, it’s that persistence matters, timing matters, and the education and connections that you make here in Anderson can truly change your career and your life. Take advantage of all the opportunities that Anderson gives you.”
Students had the opportunity to engage directly with Maestas and his team during a Q&A session, asking questions about internships, the growing role of AI, and the demand for accountants across New Mexico.
Events like this underscore Anderson’s commitment to connecting students with industry professionals. They ensure students are equipped with both the knowledge and networks to succeed.
