Message from the Dean

Dean Craig WhiteGreetings from the Anderson School! It is hard to believe we are already in the middle of April starting to close in on the end of the semester. As you will read in this edition of “This is Anderson”, the Spring semester has brought a number of exciting developments to the School.

A development that we are all looking forward to is the opening of the McKinnon Center for Management. The construction crews have been working diligently on the new building since December 2016. Their hard work is now coming to completion with the removal of the construction fence. The installation of the furnishings, audiovisual equipment, and other final touches will be taking place over the next month. The formal ribbon cutting ceremony is May 11th at 1:15 pm. If you are in Albuquerque and available, we invite you to join us for this exciting event!

The annual UNM Business Plan Competition was held on Friday, April 20, 2018. Seventeen teams competed in the technology and entrepreneurship tracks for more than $90,000 in prize money. As the competition evolves in keeping with the founder Dr. Sul Kassicieh‘s vision, the focus will shift towards ongoing mentoring of the teams both before and after the event. The idea is to help provide the resources necessary to help all the students develop their plans into successful enterprises.

I’m also happy to report that with improving conditions with the state budget, faculty and staff will be receiving a raise this year. The amount will range from 1 to 3 percent. This is a welcome change from the difficult past few years.  It is a much needed boost that will help us retain and reward deserving individuals.

I hope you enjoy this edition. This is just a small sampling of all the activities going on at the Anderson School. Associate Dean Shawn Berman picks up below with some further initiatives and comments.

Message from the Associate Dean

Associate Dean Shawn BermanTwo major new developments in our curriculum are the launch of our Managed Online Program, which will allow full BBA degree completion through online delivery. This program was developed in partnership with UNM Extended Learning. The other initiative is the development of new Master’s of Science programs, with the development of our first new MS (Project Management, Project Controls, and Program Management) being supported by both national labs, including substantial financial support from Los Alamos National Labs. The development of specialty Master’s programs follows a trend nationally in graduate business education.

Our China initiatives continue, with Dr. Robert Luo and myself heading back to China in May for a conference and student exposition at our partner university in Zhuhai, the Beijing Institute of Technology – Zhuhai. While in China, we also hope to visit the Dongguan University of Technology. We will also be once again hosting students from BITZH this summer. We expect that they will be joined this year by students from DGUT. These summer programs are important for students’ mastery of English, as well as experiencing short Anderson classes before spending their senior year studying at Anderson.
