"We hope that the students who pass through these halls will be responsible for the creation of thousands of new businesses and add materially to the employment base of our state and country." ~ Sonnet & Ian McKinnon
McKinnon Family Gift to Anderson, Lobo Athletics, and UNM Facilities
In 2018, the University of New Mexico celebrated a transformative moment in its history: the largest single gift ever made to UNM by living individuals. Sonnet and Ian McKinnon committed $7.5 million to support three vital programs at UNM—The Anderson School of Management, University Arena (“The Pit”), and the UNM Tennis Complex. Their generosity also established a permanent endowment to ensure long-term support and impact.
A Legacy Rooted in New Mexico
For Sonnet and Ian McKinnon, UNM is more than a university—it’s part of their personal history. Both grew up in Albuquerque, where the university played a central role in their families’ lives. Sonnet is a proud 1993 alumna of the Anderson School, while Ian’s connection runs deep: both of his parents and many members of his extended family are UNM graduates.
The McKinnons have long recognized the transformative power of education and athletics, and they’ve sought to give back in a way that would benefit current and future generations of Lobos. Their vision led to the creation of the McKinnon Center for Management, a hub of innovation and entrepreneurial learning designed to empower students with the tools to launch new businesses and drive economic growth across New Mexico and beyond.
Supporting the Spirit of New Mexico
The McKinnons’ gift supports more than just brick and mortar—it’s an investment in the spirit, aspirations, and future of the state. From enhancing athletic facilities that bring the community together, to strengthening business education that fuels job creation and innovation, their generosity reflects a deep commitment to New Mexico’s future.
Beyond the university, the McKinnons have also invested directly in the state’s growth, including as founding partners of New Mexico United, the state’s professional soccer team. Their passion for entrepreneurship, education, and athletics continues to shape the landscape of opportunity in New Mexico.
Honoring the Moment
To commemorate this extraordinary gift, a celebration was held in 2018 where university leaders, faculty, students, and community members gathered to express their gratitude. A video from the event captures the heartfelt speeches and reflections on the lasting impact of the McKinnons' generosity.
